The original tires have worked best for me, as my car, a '97 740iL approaches 100K miles.
I know it is against convential wisdom to assume the manufacturer got it right in terms of tires, however having tried both Pirelli and Michelin I have come back to the Continental, "Conti Touring Contact", in original size, 235x60x16. These tires seems to give good tread life, quiet, good wet weather performaance, and a comfortable ride.(It's a big sedan, not a Porsche!)
Unless you live in an area void of pot holes, well maintained streets etc. I would not go for a lower aspect ratio tire, e.g. 40 or 50 series. This will of course require a rim change, ride quality will be poorer, handling will improve, (which you said was not as important). Many think lower profile tires look better, my self included, however this is subjective, and for a big sedan I would not put up with the nuisance.
