I bought the "fit kit" for my Thule bars and bike racks from a local (Atl) bike shop, ~$95. The brackets have a rubber tipped edge which mounts into the rain gutter channel, and a gripping flange which secures it.
I think its a nice arrangement - no contact w/ bodywork.

My wife and I want to go on a bike trail trip.
