Please provide any brand name replacement, model # and cost for the battery - outside of the dealer. Dealer quoted me $340 installed which seemed to be high. I searched the archives and didn't see any replacements.

Typically VARTA batteries are used in BMWs. I believe the BCI (Battery Council International, number for the 740iL is a 95R.

I ran out of time looking for a suitable replacement and purchased from dealer for about $185 as I recall. Make sure your replacement is set up for external venting since the battery is mounted in the trunk. Remove the old battery, and clean and inspect the area, washing down with baking soda etc. before mounting the new battery. Trust me, no dealer will ever take the time to do this! I hooked up a small 12 volt battery across the jump start terminals in the engine bay to insure all memory settings on radio etc. would be maintained.
