The 99'-01' 740i Sport has numerous performance upgrades from your 98' model, many of which are hard and/or expensive to upgrade on your car, and in my humble opinion it's well worth trading up instead. I wouldn't worry about getting a lemon. You hear about the few that have problems, but you won'd really hear much from all the people that have had no trouble at all.

My two cents.

About a year and a half ago I decided I wanted a used 99 740i Sport, but couldn't find a suitable one, so I settled for a 98 740i instead with the hope of trading up later.
Well, I still haven't found one and now my warranty is expiring due to the year limit (car only has 43000km/27000mi). The dealer that sold me my car (BMW Autohaus in Markham, Ontario, Canada) originally told me I could add the Certified Series extended coverage on my car anytime before the expiry of my factory warranty, but now I've discovered that was a lie (it must be added at time of purchase). Yes, I know, caveat emptor...

Anyways, since a Sport isn't currently available for me to trade up to, do you think I should spend the money on an extended warranty if my car has been trouble-free for the past 18 months? I just had the dealer go over the car as if they were putting the Certified Series on it, and they said the car was in immaculate condition (their words).

The AutoShield warranty (which is a bumper to bumper minus wear and tear items and interior/exterior fit/finish) is what my dealer recommends but costs $4000 Canadian ($2500 USD) for a total of 7yrs/100000km/60000mi. But I've only got one and a half years left in my lease, possibly less if a Sport becomes available with the right options.

I guess my other question is do you think the Sport is worth the hassle of trading up to, or should I just do a 2001 facelift like others have done. I think the only thing you can't upgrade is the Steptronic, right? My car has been so reliable that I'm afraid I might get a lemon if I do go for a Sport...

Thanks in advance.
