My '97 740i has 48k miles and is always dealer serviced (what can I say, I've got a great one that's cared for the car since purchased and they've been terrific).
Driving on a straight stretch I put the gear shift in '4' so that the transmission would engage 1st gear off the line. At the next light, I accelerated briskly, redlining 1st and 2nd then easing off for 3rd (didn't want to speed). Steam begins to emerge from the hood. I pulled over immediately, opened the hood and there it was -- the top radiator hose had disconnected from the radiator. Somehow, the clamp worked itself loose. This is a new one on me.
So, for whatever its worth, snug up the clamps on all your hoses when you next check under the hood and car. Would have been a major bummer had it happened on a deserted road.
