Dear Simeon,

The western world could be in grave danger if President Bush decides to go to war against the Middle East. In my opinion, the United states has to attack bit by bit the people who are responsible for this, and not the innocent people who have nothing to do with it whatsoever.
For years, the American government has massacred hundreds of thousands of middle-eastern people. Just like Human beings and just like us, when someone attacks them, they feel the need to retaliate. I am not at all condoning this act, but you would know the extreme hatred that exists towards Americans in these countries, and people don't hate others for absolutely no reason. In my judgement, the American people have been ignorant to what has been going on in the Middle east for years, and by striking against Teleban and Afghanistan, they would only cause dire consequences for more innocent citizens of the Western World. The government of Teleban made a statement which read: "If the United States takes retalitary action against teleban and Afghanistan, no Westerner will be safe"
Do we really need this to happen? If this breaks out into a holy war, the end of humanity may not be far off, and how crazy it may seem to some, If President Bush carries out war on these countries, innocent people all over the world may be the victims of mass murder on a fanatical scale.
I hope that it does not come to this, but we need to pray to the good lord that your president makes the right decision.

Rgds
Charles

I think one of the problems with your best case scenario is alluded to by Charles. These people have a great hatred for America. This is a religious hatred fueled by years and years of the US supporting Isreal. The muslims want that piece of desert and will all willingly die to get it.

So, that in turn makes it difficult to determine who is innocent anymore. These people have vowed to fight to the death for bin Laden, many more than just a few hundred of them. Charles is also correct that the American people do not generally know what has been transpiring in the Middle East. BUT, if we are now facing an entire country or even region of defenders to this incident , as is very likely, what now are our options?

When I see Palestinians celebrating and handing out candy in the streets I wonder how many would be considered innocents, those not in support of what happened? Unfortunately this looks like a holy war. This is a VERY dangerous thing. We in the US simply do not understand this level of fanatisism. That is what worries me most.

So going in looking for individuals will likely be met with widespread resistance. You will not be met by just the people responsible, what I see is and entire religious sect willing to die for them. I think we have no choice but to be prepered for widespread devastation, WAR.

I pray that nukes are NEVER part of this equation, I don't think US leaders are foolish enough to start something like that. I do fear that the muslim community has access to such devices, and God help us if they use them.

Simeon, As time passes I see your concern growing, very much like mine has. Life on earth is about to change radically. My livelyhood will definately be threatened by this. I want to continue as normal but I know normal is looking prettty short lived now. I guess we all must go on faith from here on out.

I think I would like to believe one of the other posts down the board further. It went something like this, we invade Afganistan, send a message, hopefully rooting out those responsible. Making other countries very fearful of harboring these terrorists and eventually giving them up to the rest of the world for punishment. But at this point I guess we just wait and see. Brent
