BMW changes the OEM for the DSP AMP sometimes at the end of 1998 model year. The earlier maker was Philips Electronic, the later and current one is UTLOEWE, a German Electronics co. I have tried swapping both of the amp on my 1998 740i, and you are correct. The one makes by Philips has better low-end definition. I actually open up both of the amp apart, the circuit boards are completely different in term of design and components used. Except for the Motorola 56000 DSP processor. The design of UTLOEWE looks much simpler. I guess the reason BMW decided to switch the amp supplier was due to the fact that there were so much customer complaints with the Philips made amp (your problem is the most popular one...)
I do find the traces on the circuit board of the UTLOEWE model that has the Sub-pre-amp signal so that we can solder some leads into to plug into an after market amp and sub to enhance the bass response of the system.
I myself decide to replace the amp completely with a 5 channel 700 watts Soundstream amp. I already replaced all the front and rear doors speakers with ADS and MB Quart components speakers. I don't use the rear deck 'sub-woofers' since they are too small (5 1/4") for low frequency producer, instead, I have a custom sub box firing thru the rear armrest. The box is a sealed type and has a single 12" XPL Kicker.
I plan to finish this job within the next two weeks and I will post pictures afterward
