This will sound crazy, but check the air pressure in your tires. I have a 96 740IL, and the ABS light kept coming on, similar to your problem. A friend told me about the system checking air pressure. Sure enough, one tire was low. No problem since.

Sometimes my ABS engages for no apparent reason while I am in stop and go traffic. Afterwards, the ABS and ASC lights come on indicating that the system has disabled them. After turning the car off for a few minutes and restarting, the ABS/ASC lights turn off and all is normal. It is starting to happen more often now. Anyone have any ideas?
Bad sensor maybe?
