I can't understand how the stealer can not find this in the microfiche - it's a big unit that is a significant part of the center dash/console. I would just ask for one for a 97', and don't mention "new style" or anything like that, it'll just confuse them. It's like going to Burger King and asking for something that is not listed on the menu, they freak out and start running around in circles like a chicken that just got its head cut off.....anyway, I'm rambling....
HOpe it helps,

Big T, what did you ask for when you purchased your unit. I've gone to the stealership recently and asked for the newer push button unit and the parts guys couldn't find it in their microfiche. I told them I would try to find a part number or year model from this site. The parts guy was supposed to research this issue and get back to me but I haven't heard back from him and he hasn't returned my follow up call.

I replaced mine with the newer style, but I already had the dual control system. I'm not sure I understand you correctly that you do or do not have dual AC control. If you do - it's a direct replacement with the newer unit, the plugs are the same, just slightly different positions in the back of the unit.
HOpe that helps, let me know if I can clarify any.

Do you know if a newer unit with dual fan speed controls can be used to replace one of the old "four dial" style units?
Mine's a 94 E38 730i, with four controls from left to right: passenger temp, blend (screen, dash, feet, screen & feet), fan speed and driver temp.
From memory of having removed this before, the connectors all look the same as the two pictured on your site. I guess I am hoping too much to actually have independant fans though?
