Whats the best price I could negotiate a dealer to on a new
2001 740il, stratus met. w/sport package, & convenience pkg.
Sticker price was 71,xxx and they said they'd take 10k off that.

Hi Jeff,
Since there is no gas-guzzler tax on the "il's" and the incentive is $7,500. vs. $5,000. on the "I's"'-right now an il is cheaper than an "I". On an "iL" there is actually a
$4300. incentive difference over an I. (gas guzzler tax on the "I"/sport is $1700.) In
addition, go to either the Edmunds or Kelly-Blue
Book websight and cost/price out the car you want and negotiate your deal. Geography makes a big difference. Recently, I worked quite hard on negotiating a price from a Chicago and Detroit area dealer(s) and was amazed to learn that these folks seriously "expect" 5-7K on a 740. Conversely, in the LA area one can easily get a dealer to start at around 3K (above invoice) and then (grind) work from there. Work with the largest dealer's that have the most cars, hence want the most sales. Small dealerships are small for a reason-they don't sell cars. With BMW - allocation/availabiltiy of new cars is the key(for the selling dealer's) and the more a dealership sells the more this dealership gets in allocation. Smart dealer's know that even if a deal doesn't profit them as much as they would like, every deal made, means(with allocation) another chance, at another deal-that will/might. Further, every sale made, means business for their parts and service departments. The smaller guys either don't operate in markets that can support volume business or don't get it...(literally).
Good Luck,

Jeff,
My error. The difference is $3700. not $4300.
The incentive for the "I" is $5500. not the $5000.- that I stated. (don't ask me to explain the other hundred bucks)
