The M5 has remained bulletproof since inception as long as you learn to be somewhat eaay with the clutch. It has about the same clamping force as a 540i, so if you are late engaging it and early on applying too much power, you'll slip it. With that much torque on hand, it won't take long doing that until it's toast.

Oil consumption WAS higher in the M5 early on, but after the car reaches 10k miles or so, it settles down. This is due to synthetic from day one. It takes a long time for the piston rings to seat properly. If your buying used, and above 10k miles, oil usage won't be a factor.

The cupholders stink, but I drink or eat anything in it anyway.

The tires are good for 20k at best. But the Michelins grip like heck, so it's a nice tradeoff.

Mine is an 11/99 build and I have 18k on the odo so far. It's still tight, solid, and dependable. The engine is just as smooth as the day it rolled off the showroom.

I had two 540i's before this and thought it wouldn't be much different. It is in fact a totally different car. It's amazing how much the two can look the same and drive so differently. I just love the M5's handling/power.

Try to get the dealer to let you have one (used)overnight. I know most won't do this, but if you have bought from him before, you never know.

If you decide to do it, you won't be disspaointed, they are great performance machines with all the luxury in the world.

That pic was WONDERFUL ! GUESS WHAT ??? The M5 im hitting on has exactly the same wheels ! I think Im falling in love with them...

By the way, I didnt really think that last point you made was "favorable" to the 5-Series droolers :) "Lower Scale..." I guess they're just different.

By the way, one thought about why they came out as 3,5,7 is coz of the consecutive years which they came into existence. maybe...

And one more thing... If it wouldn't be too much to ask of you, would you please write to me (When youre absolutely free) about your troubles and 'negatives' with your M5 ???

Thanks Aussie, your post was really good.

M.
