AM/FM tuner problem (archive)

The tuner in my 96 740il is intermittent. The CD changer and tape deck work fine. Sometimes the tuner won't work for days and then BAM it starts to work (scares the hell out of me when it works). The ST (stereo) light is on regardless if an actual station is tuned. If the scan function is used it just scans continously and never locks on to a station. Dealer says I need a new radio ($700). I found a used radio for $250 plus installation. I would rather get mine repaired but I can't find anyone who can service it. Any one out there got any ideas?
