Can OEM replacement wheels void warranty? (archive)

Posted by PTH on October 21, 2001 at 21:37:29:

I have a 2001 740iL with 17 inch star-type seven spoke wheels with Michelin drive-flat tires; they are original equipment.

I think the star-pattern wheels look fine with the 3 series but don't look good at all on the 7 series, and I want to replace them with more "classic" - looking 17 inch OEM BMW 2- piece alloy wheels "Style No. 5", i.e., bolted, cross-spoke rims, 17" by 8".

The wheel man says they'll fit just fine, but the parts men at both BMW dealers I checked (my dealer, Momentum, and also Advantage, both in Houston) -- neither of whom seemed to know very much about wheels at all -- said if the wheels were not specifically prescribed for the 2001 740iL in the wheels vendor manual, that (1) "it may be not an exact fit, even if the centers and lugs fit OK, and it can cause vibration" and (2) it may void the warranty -- I have a 100k mi extended warranty and only 12,000 miles on the car.

Anyone out there with any experience in this area -- especially bad experiencees? Anyone ever had a dealer void a warranty on a car because replacement wheels have been put on? Anyone know whether the Style 5's should or should not fit the '01 740iL?

WOuld much appreciate any feedback.
