I have a 98 740il and experienced the same problem two weeks ago. Sure enough it was the battery. I tried finding a battery from an NTW or similar store but was directed back to the dealer due to special vent & load requirements. I had it replaced (out of warranty) for $190 plus $85 installation and alternator test (load charge?) - work done at the dealership.
