What you describe sounds like a battery going bad. Hope that's it as my situation is more expensive.

I have a 2001 740iL and I've experienced the following situations several times.
1) 3 times I've tried to start the car and it cranks and cranks, but won't start. When I turn the key off, remove it, reinsert it and try again the car starts right up.
2) Maybe 10 times the car has just barely tried to crank and then nothing. Remove and reinsert the key and the key starts fine.

I had it into the dealer for the annual service, service guy said he had never heard of it and since it wasn't predicable he was not hopeful. When I picked the car up, the service guy said they found a technical service bulletin on this problem, and then needed to replace the starter switch and engine computer. Parts are on order. Hope yours is under warrentee...joe
