If the block hasn't been replaced, I'd stay miles away from it. You can find a lot of block info on this site.
Otherwise, take it to an independent mechanic who specializes in BMWs and have them give it a once over. They can tell you how the brakes, hoses, etc., are doing, and they should know about the service bulletins affecting this model.

Hello. I am looking into purchasing a '98 740il with 99k miles from a friend. I have never owned a BMW before. Can you suggest particular things to look for? How would you rate this model year vehicle? Any particular mechanical defects associated with this model year? What's a fair price if it is mechanically sound and good interior/exterior? Thanks.
