1994 740i Ceck engine/transmisison program (archive)

I just bought a 1994 740i to replace a '97 Explorer with transmission problems. While driving the car today, just 60 miles into my ownership, I was coasting down a long mountain road. The check engine light began to flicker then went solid on. Then, the car downshifted hard and the transmission program message came on. At the base of the hill, the check engine light went off and stayed off. the transmisssion program message has not reappeared. The car starts and runs fine otherwise. Have I traded in one bad tranny for another? Opionions, please.
