Recently, I have tried a number of brands of halogen bulbs to find the one with the whitest light. Specifically, I was looking for the bulb to give more light and not have a yellowish tint.
All bulbs were standard 55-watt bulbs. I'm sure you could get more light on the road with a 70 or 100-watt bulb, but I didn't want to risk melting my wiring. My methods were unscientific at best, but I just let my eyes be the judge.
The bulbs I tested were the Phillips Blue Vision, Mesa Blue Ion, Hella Halogen and the Solaris Ultra White.
Ratings:
#1 Solaris Ultra White
#2 Mesa Blue Ion
#3 Hella Halogen
#4 Phillips Blue Vison
I am convinced Hella and Phillips were simply stock halogen bulbs. They didn't have one lick of whiteness or extra brightness to them. Both were disappointments. The Mesa Blue Ion actually looked fairly blue to me from behind the wheel, but the light it casts when viewed from oncoming traffic looks like a standard yellow halogen.
The Solaris Ultra Whites were more expensive than the others, but noticably whiter and worth the extra money IMHO. I now run Solaris H1 low beams, H7 high beams and H3 foglights.
Anyone need some extra bulbs :)
