I just had a 2000 7401 / sport package come off lease and decided to lean a bit more to the comfort side and picked up a brand new 2001 740iL with sport package. Fantastic auto and we really like it for what little time we have had in it. When going over speed bumps or other road conditions that create moderate front suspension travel we hear (more than feel) a minor "thump". Our speed is very slow. It happens ONLY when the S EDC is OFF. With it on - nothing is heard. Is this common or does it indicate a problem? Any ideas? Could someone give me a layman's explanation of EDC? Somewhere I recall that there is an electric activation of the valve on the front shocks that comes into play. If so - does it do any harm to leave it on all of the time?
