Steve

What is the Guibio flex coupling and what does it do?

I hear a thumping noise from the rear passenger side upon acceleration. thump thump thump. the noise goes away once you ease up on the accelerator. i have a 97 740il with 80k.

thought i ran over a cat ;). But, looking through our Board's archives, it seems that pre E38 models had some center bearing issues.

Does this sound like a similar problem? I'd be surprised that the drivetrain took a dump after 80k miles, but you never know.

thx

Steve
The guibo coupling connects the drive-shaft to the output shaft of the transmission. Very thick/dense rubber coupling that will wear out depending upon how you drive your car. If seriously worn, the coupling will "feather" and can, make a thumping noise as you describe....not uncommon, (especially with bimmers with standard transmissions)....
