just had both cats replaced under federal 8/80 warranty--get out of the car, kneel down between driver and rear door--cats will rattle when not accelerating, as well as when driving--heat sheild could be loose, though unlikely--as T said location important if not rattling at idle as well--had knocking noise a while back--initilally thought was fuel related, and ran couple tanks of amoco 93 through it(usually use whatever premium is cheapest)--did not go away--turned outvalve cover gasket leaking and i was almost 2 quarts low on oil--funny how a little oile makes a differenc--at 85k, not unusual to have any number of seals and gaskets seeping, or worse--if you haven't had it done in couple of years, would recommend inspection 2--amazing how much newer a car drives with proper preventive maintenance--long winded, sorry, but have been babying my 7er for the last few weeks--good luck !
Start by trying to pintpoint where the sound comes from and the nature of the sound. Rattle can mean many things - can you describe it more accurately? Is it only sound or also physical vibrations associated with it? try to pay close attention to where the sound might come from - perhaps with someone in the back seat as well to listen. Does the sound come on any other times? Perhaps under load/uphill?
Good luck - report back when you have more info, maybe we can help you out.

My 96 740 sometimes makes a rattling noise on acceleration, usually when taking off from a stop or slow coasting position. The car runs fine, dealer wants me to allow them 3 hours to try and diagnose the problem. Car has 85k miles, is anyone else experiencing this problem, any solutions or ideas?
Thanks,
Dan
