Greg,

The thermostat and plastic thermostat housing are common E38 parts failures. Be sure to replace both. Consider replacing the water pump, radiator, and coolant reservoir at the same time, if they're original. Take a good look at the belts and hoses while you're at it. They are all prone to sudden failure around 70K miles and thereafter.
