Don't be!
I have the BMW Technical Information System(TIS) CD-ROM that includes the Service Bulletin.
I also have a 98, 740i
There are only a hand full of these that are actual system design problems with the E-38 and often only a few months of production are affected. The balance are Service Information Bulletins to train the technician or make them aware of special maintenance items such as new tool, test procedures procedures, parts updates, etc.
I have had the radiator cap(all BMW's).
The DME has been reprogrammed twice.
Repairs to my 740i:
The thermostat internal heater failed.
The Multi-Information Display(MID) sporadic flash.
The driver and passenger side seat trim attachment clip breaks and the seat control will fail(3 times).
After 49K miles I'm very satisfied.
The only re-occuring problem will be the seat trim!!
