cats are covered under federally mandated warranty to 80k, so at 86k you don't get the benefit, but the diagnosis is simple--you'll be able to dear the rattling at low speeds or idle as well with the windows down--put on a lift, and tap on the cats with a rubber mallet--if they rattle, they're bad--take it to a private shop--these guys are generally willing to do a diagnosis for you without asking for a 5 hour labor charge--and, can probably tell you with a test drive how the tranny is working--just had tranny svc done and the tranny runs like new now, had the cats done as well--they are two completely different sets of diagnostic problems--if the cats aren't bad, then you can concern yourself witht he other potential issues--good luck
Sounds like the catalytic converter problem I had. Dealer reluctantly replaced my left side cat. I heard from other independent mechanics that the cat is covered under Fed regulation for free replacement up to 100K miles, so CPO warranty is not a major issue here. Good luck!
