BMW doesn't use a rubber belt like most manufacturers. The chain theoretically doesn't require periodic replacement.

And in your case, the new block came with a brand new chain anyway, so you can forget about that issue altogether.

Hopefully, they replaced the water pump when changing your engine, as they often do fail around 100K miles. And radiators fail at the same time. Both of the above are real baddies, as you risk overheating and damaging your brand-new block.

Transmission is, as you say, a matter of debate.
