I have a 95 740i, 150,000 miles, making a thump, thump noise every 3 seconds or so. It seems related to the heater. I can smell a strong odor of antifreeze coolant when the heater is turned on. Also the Check Coolant warning comes on within one week of adding a couple of ounces of coolant to the reserve. Been going on for weeks now. Any comments anyone?
I wasn't clear from your posting....are you using coolant? Finding a puddle under the vehicle? Puffs of whitish smoke from exhaust? Sometimes those things are symptoms of a blown head gasket...coolant is leaking into one or more cylinders, and you are burning it. Especially to be considered if you use coolant, but find no obvious leaks under vehicle or in or around block.
