Agree with JL on disappointment with BMW. The annoyances with the car which shouldn't happen on this class of automobile, and the totally unacceptable dealer attitude, push me away from BMW. My first car after college was a 1984 Toyota Supra--a 100K miles/9 years later, and the only major problem was a fuel pump, and the fit and finish were impeccable. The BMW is more fun to drive, and great when it works, but a disappointment at the same time. BMW should finish a fabulous design job by going all the way--to use a football analogy--they quit after the first down(sale) instead of pushing for the touchdown (customer satisfaction ensuring return customers). If Toyota still made the Supra, I'd be driving one. And I hate to say that.
But I love my car...most of the time...

As of one month ago I was driving a 87 Toyota Supra. I owned it for 14 years, and 180,000 miles. I drove it hard. I mean really hard. Full throttle starts and the like. I chewed up two driveshafts, but the transmission and engine never let me down until last month, when I broke the crankshaft (and maybe more.) I was going to have a turbo powerplant put in to replace the motor, but decided to buy a BMW 740i instead. My wife forced me to buy a 4 door you see.

Can you believe the price of those Supra's got over $50,000!

But I too must say I really love my 95 BMW 740i.

You mentioned college, I drove a Volkswagon Jetta, at the time, but had major BMW envy. So I removed all VW badgeware, and markings, and switched the VW chrome logo in the grill with the BMW badge, and felt much better for awhile. That is until I upset maybe one too many BMW enthusiasts. Lets just say my grillwork on the VW did not look too good one day. Hey did they really have to take away my BMW badge!!!!
