Unless you are somewhat of a DIYer, I would consider an aftermarket warranty or buy a 740 with a certified pre-owned warranty. These are outstanding cars, but they are not cheap to own. They certainly don't continually break down, but there are several $400-$800 things that you know with some certainty will go wrong with every 740 at some point (water pump, radiator, pcv valve, etc.). And it goes without saying that brakes, tires and other garden variety items are more expensive than that on a Honda. Are 740s worth it? In my opinion - Yes!

We are looking at a '97 740il with 70,000 miles on it. Great condition. First time BMW buyers - so... what kind of maintenance/repair will we be looking at in the forseeable future. We know it's a quarter-million mile car, but what does it cost to keep this 5-yr old car running??
