This list was posted by Howard not too long ago...here it is again: i think its a very on-point and useful guide - i've used it as a checklist! (sad, i know, but all in all, despite the higher cost of maintenance, the 7 is worth the investment...but be prepared to whip out the cash!)

'95 740i (64K miles)

"Here is a, by no means inclusive or comprehensive, list that I have been keeping from the board post and my own experience:
1. Loosing pixel display in temperature, mileage display. (Dashboard and MID)
2. Catalytic converters failing
3. Power steering hoses leaking
4. Cup holders failing
5. Engine block problems in years 93-95.
6. Oil pump bolts backing out
7. Radiator failures. Plastic neck breaking off upper radiator and coolant reservoir.
8. A/C stepper motors failing/noisy
9. Original Water pumps with plastic impellers failing
10. Coolant thermostat failing, Thermostat housings crack and leak
11. Poor quality jack
12. Electric engine cooling fan failing in year 98 and newer
13. Sunroof wind noise (open shade on highway to test)
14. CD player skipping in models older than 97
15. A/C temperature displays failing in 93-95
16. Phones not being upgradeable without major cost or modifications
17. A/C drain lines need re-routing to stop gurgling sound
18. Poor AM radio reception
19. Door handles snap off
20. Power window stops fail (clunk at bottom)
21 Power seat issues of various types
22. Radio Antenna wire breakage
23. Fuel Pumps fail between 70k and 100K miles
24. Center Brake light gasket shrunk and fell down inside housing
25. Cracked wood interior trim
26. Leaking Auxiliary Water Pump (used for REST retained heat feature)
27. Upper Windshield gasket dry rots and cracks, results in wind noise at highway speed
28. Front Thrust Bushings
29. Poor quality stereo, dissatisfaction with DSP, No Bass with standard or Premium stereo.

And the list goes on....."
