I agree with other comments, but it does vary a lot. I bought my 95' with 58k miles and have just over 70k now. I have had minimal repair costs in the year and half I've had it - maybe a few hundred dollars. I did have the engine replaced under BMW warranty, but that didn't cost me anything. I've spent quite a bit of money on modifications, but I don't consider that a measure of the car's reliability. I didn't buy an aftermarket warranty because I couldn't afford it at the time I bought the car. Since then the car has been so reliable that I haven't really considered it. Another thing to mention perhaps: I do most work myself on my car. I can save almost all labor by doing repairs myself and source the parts from non-BMW outlets. If I was not mechanically inclined, I would probably be more eager to get an aftermarket warranty.

Hope that helps,
T.

We are looking at a '97 740il with 70,000 miles on it. Great condition. First time BMW buyers - so... what kind of maintenance/repair will we be looking at in the forseeable future. We know it's a quarter-million mile car, but what does it cost to keep this 5-yr old car running??
