I've had my '97 740iL for 15 months and have really only had minor repairs, with the exception of the fitting/stem from the radiator breaking off at the hose clamp last week and leaking out my coolant at 70mph! The good news is it was covered under the extended warranty - 30 mile flatbead ride to the dealer and all. ($800 charged to BMW, thank you.)

I would be conscious of what services have been done on the car. I just had a Service II done a few weeks ago, with 73K miles. It was a slew of all preventitive maintenance, but it did cost me a about $1K. The Service I was only about 300. The next major service shouldn't be for another 30K miles.

After I signed that Visa reciept for $1K I can't say I was jumping for joy, but I can say that I love my 7 so damn much I think its well worth it!

Good luck with your purchase.

We are looking at a '97 740il with 70,000 miles on it. Great condition. First time BMW buyers - so... what kind of maintenance/repair will we be looking at in the forseeable future. We know it's a quarter-million mile car, but what does it cost to keep this 5-yr old car running??
