The wind noise from windshield is virtually non-existent. According to the dealer, when they go to replace the seal, there is a high likelihood that the windshield will crack/chip. This is what happened to mine. They also noted that the windshield replaced was already a replacement that was installed improperly (certain windshield electrical connections were cut).
Once you get rid of the windshield noise and (sunroof noise if applicable) you may begin to here wind noise from your side windows/door jams. I have settled on letting these be as they are not too annoying.

Evan,
How successful were you eliminating the wing noise? Did you replace or only reseat the windshield? I'm considering doing this.
Thanks

I am new to the board and am quite intrigued with the useful information I have been able to gather. It is much nicer going to the dealer with the specific issues and possible fixes that for them to go on a fishing expedition.
In any event, here is my two cents:
I have a 97 740iL I bought in May 2001 with 57K miles. I have had many of the issues mentioned in this board including:
a. replace windshield and seals to reduce wind noise.
b. replace sunroof seals to reduce wind noise.
c. new front tires and front rotors to eliminate road shimmy at 50mph to 65 mph.
d. replace clamps on power steering unit to reduce leaks.
Unfortunately, none of these repairs were covered under the CPO warranty which is due to expire in October 2002.
I still have to look into the squeek in the rear (parking brake cable, guide, grommet). I am hoping this will be covered under the CPO warranty.
Does anyone have information on aftermarket warranties under my circumstances?
Thanks.

Unless you are somewhat of a DIYer, I would consider an aftermarket warranty or buy a 740 with a certified pre-owned warranty. These are outstanding cars, but they are not cheap to own. They certainly don't continually break down, but there are several $400-$800 things that you know with some certainty will go wrong with every 740 at some point (water pump, radiator, pcv valve, etc.). And it goes without saying that brakes, tires and other garden variety items are more expensive than that on a Honda. Are 740s worth it? In my opinion - Yes!

We are looking at a '97 740il with 70,000 miles on it. Great condition. First time BMW buyers - so... what kind of maintenance/repair will we be looking at in the forseeable future. We know it's a quarter-million mile car, but what does it cost to keep this 5-yr old car running??
