51k puts it just out of warranty (unless owner extended it) and after market warranties (highly recommended) will cost between 1 and 2K (try to get a bumper to bumper warranty, they're worth it). You should absolutely have a BMW mech. go over the car for a pre-purchase inspection. Have the owner agree to this prior to and he should pay for it if you find major problems that queer the deal. You also may want to run a title search (carfax.com) to make sure it hasn't been wrecked/salvaged. You'll need the car's VIN #.

That said, if the car looks in good shape and comes through inspection and carfax clean, I'd say you've got a very good deal before you!
