OK, Roar may be a clue. Could it be that your fan clutch, (the engine driven fan) is not disengaging. The rain idea does not play into it, normally this will occur with a very hot engine, or briefly in very cold weather, not necessarily rain.

The traction control light is not coming on. It is a weird noise. You can hear the engine roar almost like it is amplified. It does not do it all the time in the rain, only sometimes. It will do it for a little while and then quit. I have never heard anything like it.
