I have read all likes, dislikes, gripes and all on this board.
I am considering buying a 740i in addition to my 528iA.
Before the 528 I had an Acura and before that it was a 320is.
I can't say I have a lot of experience with these cars (BMW) BUT I know that a luxury vehicle requires a lot of maitenance.
Sometimes a car can be defective hence we have lemon laws. Components will fail from time to time, just like any man made thing.
I got rid of my Acura with 213k miles on it, my friend who also had an Acura at that time spent almost the same amount of money it cost to by the car originally in repairing his Acura. The only component I ever changed was the alternator @ 192K miles. Pure luck - maybe.
However I have also noticed that most of the gripes about squeaks, noise, rattle and all that really do not affect function.
If you want a car that won't have any of that I would suggest the Lexus 400/430. If you want a car that would put a smile on your face anytime you push down on the gas pedal, get a bimmer.
Dealer service is a major complaint for many, for me my dealer has been great and I do not act like they owe me the world when I am there. Just be nice.

Merc dealerships are no different either, my wife drives a C, so I know.. and the parts - cost way more than my bimmer.

Like I said if you want a trouble free luxury car, get a Lexus (maintenance too is not cheap), If you want a sport-luxury car get a bimmer.

........ And if you want trouble free (Cheap)-never have to look under the hood, squeak, rattle free, 40 mpg car get a Honda Civic.
