the cat converters.

I start the car, at least let it go past the blue temp zone and drive slowly until the temp normalizes.

I know what you are saying. Sometimes, upon startup on a very cold day, the idle is not normal. The engine usually compensates for the cold temp by revving it a little bit higher (to heat things up faster). When you shift the car to drive while the rpm is high, be prepared for the sudden movement. That's why I don't move until the rpm's are reasonably normal so I won't have to deal with this. In other words, I look at the tachometer instead of the temp gauge.

Plus, you also have to give time to let things circulate (oil - with the exception of the coolant which I believe circulates when the thermostat reaches a certain optimum temp).

And we're not in the movies.... Those folks jump in unlocked cars (with keys waiting) and drive right away.
