I have read several articles by car care experts that say it is bad for a car to idle for 5-10 minutes at cold startup. The reason is the vast majority of engine wear and tear is at this time, as the oil has drained to the bottom of the engine, and it is cold (thus thicker). It is imperative to get the engine and oil warmed up as soon as possible to lessen this wear and tear; immediately driving the car will warm it up much faster than idling in a driveway. The articles said to begin driving as soon as the oil gauge reaches proper pressure (or idiot light goes out), then drive moderately until proper temp is reached (no hard acceleration). The winter has arrived here in NY, therefore I started to warm up my car before I drive it to go to work. Reading the owners manual, it says don't let the car "warm up" for more than 30 sec before drive away. Well I normally let my car warm up for about 05 to 10 min. leaving the car at idle for this period of time will cause more of a trouble in my car, than just wait for 30 seconds and drive away?. To be honest, right know every time before I drive my car with temperatures between -15 to 25 degrees I warm up my car. which really concerns me a lot. so the question againg is should I or not ?
