Auto door locks? (archive)

I have a 98' 740il, with the cost of the car shouldn't the doors automatically lock when we drive off, can this be programmed by the dealer or is only available on the new bimmers. Also, with the driver door open I can not open the other doors by pressing the unlock button, the driver door has to be closed first, is this the way it supposed to work, it's kind of awkward at times, ... just checking if anyone else had thoughts about this.
