On other point--the 528 was ranked by a major
consumer magazine as the best car for retaining it's value 5 years after purchase, so you'll lose less in depreciation compared to the 7.
Hard choice, but if money is a big concern, the 528 will be less hassle and less expensive. You'll also be able to get a later model with more warranty remaining...maybe you shouldn't ever drive a 7 or 540 so you won't know what you're missing.
I bought a 96 740IL a little over a year ago and have replaced the auxiliary cooling fan ($400 plus) and am facing the radiatior, catalytic converters, etc., in the near future if I keep it. It's great though. Good luck with your decision.

Have been driving a 95 540 6 speed (yes, still have original engine) since 1997--and ready for a change---this car has eaten me up on repairs----otherwise it is a super automobile----but am ready for a change----looking to spend in the area of $35K---my shop tells me to get a 528--but am intrigued with a 7 series---to get something different than the 5 er------Any advice would be appreciated----I don't want to repeat my 540 experience and therefore am gun shy on a 740-----Tks Dave S

Tks alot for the reply---know what you mean---the 540 6 sp I've been driving for the past 4 plus years is easily the fastest and most fun car I've ever had (with the exception of the ,69 GTO I had in college)-----but am really tired of the hassels with the 540---I do think that I got a bit of a lemon----thing is that I'm 6'5" and I've never found a car with this kind of room--leg and head------do you know if the 528 is equal in same--I would think the 740 would be at least as roomy
