Although a bit complicated, some folks have done the upgrade. I recently saw an article in a Car magazine where Sony did a custom Audio upgrade for Conan's BMW (talk show host on NBC).

Depeneds on what you want to acheive, and what kind of $$'s on this project, you can mix and match

Simple Upgrades
a. Subwoofer from BAVAuto
b. Speaker upgrades (I beileve some folks have used Nokia ones), check www.bmwtips.com .....
