Sounds like you have a unique car for the US market. There were significant differences in available options between the US and Euro market, so what you're saying makes sense.

the 1996 740i was produced, but only in germany. i have one which was
shiped to me from germany. the car has many options which did not shom
up in this country until 1998 - 2000. examples; nav-tv(the tv works
while in motion), park distant control, intergrated telephone,
steptronics transmission, bullet proof glass, cd changer, 18" wheels
etc. the car has 46, 000 miles. it turly a magnificant machine.
