This sounds like you are losing the vehicle speed signal from the rear differential. This is either the sensor itself or a faulty connection somewhere under the car. Either way, this is probably not the most expensive thing to repair/replace. I'd give it a try before ripping in to a bunch of electronics. The next time this happens, check to see if the cruise control will work. If its the speed sensor, it definitely should not. Good luck.
