These things become brittle with age (5 yrs) and break
at the tabs (not at the screws). So I was driving at 80 mph and I hear this flapping noise. I slowed down and it went away. Sped up, heard it again. So I pulled over to the shoulder of I-78 and to my amazement, the plastic cover of the oil pan was hanging down. The only things holding it were the screws on one edge. So I exited and found a curb high enough drive into to raise the right side of the car. I didn't want to use the BMW jack (too dangerous and useless). I slid underneath with a phillips screwdriver and took the damn part off. Placed it in the trunk.
Now I have to dish out $ to buy a new one. I suggest you check yours too!
