The BMW coolant is silica free, which prevents the problem commonly known as "the green sludge" from accumulating in the bottom of the radiator. Supposedly, the prestone stuff, and the like will allow the silica in solution to precipitate out and accumulate in low flow areas of the block and radiator. While I do agree that the BMW and similar silica free coolant is probably better, if you flush you cooling system as part of a regular maintence regime, I doubt you will have any problems over the long run.
Besides, the new plastic radiator will fail before the sludge becomes a problem.Regards,
Greg
The BMW coolent is supposed to last 100-k. I think it will react better with the internal parts over time. Some others think the non-BMW coolent will break down the plastic in the raditor over time. I don't know if that's true but when mine broke it had green or Prestone antifreeze in it.
coolant. A little expensive but worth it.......The OWM radiator is a Behr
My 740I just broke her radiator neck and I need to find a replacement. Any suggestions on the replacement? factory replacement or an aftermarket?
Any tips when replacinf the radiator?
Thanks for the info. I visited the web site and have my order in.
Why the recommendation for the BMW coolant vs Prestone?
