In my case, it was one (of the four) O2 sensors the first time. The second time it was the thermostat. It can also be an air leak in the intake or a failure of one of several sensors. I've also heard that a loose gas cap can trigger the light.

By the way, a good independent will have a code reader and be familiar with this so unless you are under warranty, no need to go to the dealer.

can anyone tell me what could be the couse of my check agine light being on, is 1997 740i , I got it 2 month ago and it was ok. the place I got it told me to bring it to the dealer....
