In the various auto magazines I read, E38 between 96 ~ 98 are in the low 7's (7.1, 7.2). Edmunds has it at 7.2 sec. BMW tweaked the E38 a bit from 99' on model years, magazine test result varies between 6.6 ~ 6.9 sec. Don't know about manufacture spec. The Sport models (not just sport wheels option) since 1999 are even quicker, some have it as quick as 5.9 sec., slowest review I read have the Sport clocked at 6.2 sec.

I have a 97' 740i, was not aware BMW made the changes with 99' model years until I drove a 00' 740il. Much broader torque & sportier feel. That's when I posted the questions, received some very helpful advice and decided to upgrade mine with Dinan stuff to match the newer standard E38's performance. However, I believe the upgrade I have done still trails the Sport models, for my car only feels as quick as the 00' 740il now.

JL (below are what I've done so far)
97' 740i
Dinan Stage 2 trans/engine
Dinan Cold Air
Dinan 3.15 diff.
BV front strut
Bilstein HD suspension
H & R Springs
ATE rotors (luckily no warp)
17" wheels from E39 Sport models
245/50/17 ZR Mich. Pilot Sport A/S

Next in line, PIAA 5000K temp H1/H3/H7 bulbs
