Grandrabbit,

There may be an issue with the sensor that reads the flywheel's position. It may be that dirt has partially covered the sensor and the diagnostic tool is reporting lower than normal voltage from the sensor. The sensor is located, from under the car, facing the normal direction of travel (forward), (on a ZF5HP24 auto) on the lower right quadrant of the bell housing.

The flywheel in the automatic transmission is really just a ring gear that is attached to the crank & the input shaft of the transmission. On a manual transmission the ring gear is part of the dual mass flywheel. On our cars the ring gear is what the starter uses to turn the motor over and there is a flat steel ring with teeth which are evenly spaced, bolted to the ring gear. On one side of this steel ring, two teeth are missing creating a gap. This gap is carefully aligned on the crank to correspond to TDC. The sensor looks for this gap and the entirety of the DME's operation (fuel injection, ignition map, timing advance, etc.) is based upon this sensor "seeing" where the gap is.

The sensor can be removed and wiped off with a clean soft dry cloth & replaced without too much difficulty. Inspect the wiring to the sensor, perhaps there is some faulty insulation and exposed bare wire present.

I hope this helps.

Simeon
