In Reply to: 740iL vs. 750iL - which is more reliable? posted by Potential buyer on February 24, 2002 at 14:33:40:

I have owned both. The 12 has obvious motoring advantages, but I kid you not....repair and parts costs can be breathtaking. Upper oil pan gasket (it has 2...upper and lower pans = $1,000 in labor...gasket extra) Remember, it has 2 of almost everything. Very heavy and somwhat largish engine crammed in...sometimes you must dismantle a lot in order to reach the item(s) to be repaired. If cost is not an object...do the 12. I changed in favor of the M62.

I'm not sure if anybody has started a flame war on this item yet, but I am a potential buyer of an E38, and reliability is a big concern. I can't spend more then 35,000, so I am looking for a Pre-99 model... I know that some higher milage (80,000+) 750s are in this price range, along with a good number of 740s.

So... the question is- which do I buy? The 750 or 740? I know the maintenance will be more expensive on the 750, however which would leave me with less downtime?

Thanks in advance...
