I leased my '99 740iL new, and it has the same "tint" as yours. This is not really tint--there's an infrared filter sandwiched between two layers of glass. This keeps the interior cooler on hot days and also prevents interior fade. If you look behind your rear view mirror you'll see another "cut out" so the garage door opener remote controls will work. Unfortunately, the best place for your detector is in the cut out, as it is hard for the detector to see through the infrared filter.

I recently bought a 1999 740i sport and noticed excessive wind noise around the windshield. The dealer replaced it under warranty last week. My new windshield has an obvious tint with a cut out above the dash where one might mount a radar detector. Anyone familiar with this new design? Does this tint not allow me to keep my radar detector on my visor as before? Any help would be appreciated. Also, has anyone found a good spot to tap into an "ignition on" power source either by the visor or under the glove box?
