Maybe the 2001 models have changed (a lot) but that just won't work on my rear seat!

My rear seat (and I'll bet yours too) is snapped to the carpeted panel (below the front edge) on each side. Pull up on the front, lower edge of the seat and it will release. Then pull forward. The seat back is held in place with nuts on threaded studs at the outside corners.
You'll have a hell of a time replacing the seat if left "hinged" at the front. Just press down on the seat front after repositioning the rear edge (seatbelt devices, etc).
At least on my '96 E38.
